Grishk (Gereshk)
Grishk, also known as Gereshk, is one of the most important towns in Helmand Province, located about 120 kilometers northwest of Kandahar. It lies on the main highway (Highway 1) that connects Kandahar, Herat, and Kabul, making it a vital hub for trade and transport in southern Afghanistan. The town sits along the Helmand River, which provides water for agriculture and helps sustain the surrounding communities. Historically, Grishk has been a place of strategic and economic importance. Lashkar Gah
Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand Province, lies at the meeting point of the Helmand and Arghandab rivers. The city’s name means “army barracks” in Persian, referring to its historic role as a military center. Today, it serves as the administrative, cultural, and economic heart of Helmand. Historically, Lashkar Gah was part of the ancient city of Bost, which was an important center during the Ghaznavid Empire (10th–12th centuries). Because of its location on major trade routes, it connected Afghanistan with Iran, Central Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. Traders and travelers once passed through this region carrying goods like silk, spices, and pottery.Modern Lashkar Gah combines traces of the old city with new developments. It has government buildings, schools, markets, and mosques that reflect the daily life of the Helmand people. The nearby Helmand River provides water for farming, making the area one of the more fertile parts of southern Afghanistan. Despite the challenges of recent years, Lashkar Gah remains a symbol of resilience and an important center for the province’s future development.
Kajaki Dam
The Kajaki Dam, built on the Helmand River, is one of Afghanistan’s largest and most vital hydroelectric projects.
Sangin Valley
